Mapping Our Voices for Equity (MOVE)

A Good Idea

Description

Mapping our Voices for Equality (MOVE) leverages digital stories and face-to-face organizing to influence policy, systems, and environmental change. MOVE creatively uses media to tell stories, which can be contributed by community members. The stories are displayed on a local map to show the impact of policies on health and place-based changes to improve health. The approach is based on a belief that telling community stories can engage new leaders in neighborhoods disproportionately impacted by inequities, strengthen grassroots organizations' ability to advocate on their own behalf, and lead to social justice.

Goal / Mission

MOVE goals are to visually demonstrate health inequities and positive changes in Washington State, to highlight local Communities Putting Prevention to Work efforts to improve health, and to foster local partnerships.

Impact

The MOVE initiative is empowering community members to identify and raise awareness of the health inequities impacting them.

Results / Accomplishments

The MOVE initiative is empowering community members to identify and raise awareness of the health inequities impacting them. Over 100 multilingual digital stories have been posted to the MOVE website. In 2013, MOVE expanded to two new counties in Washington State. This website now includes both a geographic view and story gallery view of Pierce and Yakima Counties. The MOVE model has been replicated in other communities in the United States, and current efforts are underway to create a national MOVE map.
