Trooper Island

A Good Idea

Description

The Kentucky State Police operates an annual summer camp on Trooper Island for underprivileged children who may not be able to attend camp otherwise. The Trooper Island Camp program, a 501c3 non-profit, is dedicated to the development of one's self image by building the physical body with nutritious food and exercise, developing mental capabilities with classroom study, and providing spiritual growth through non-denominational chapel services. Campers participate in a variety of activities, including swimming, canoeing, and arts and crafts, and receive educational classes on subjects like Boating Safety, Nature, and Internet Safety. Children ages 10-12 are selected from each region of 16 Kentucky State Police Posts. The program is funded solely through donations and is free for attendees. Each post must raise sufficient funds to send children from its post area.

Goal / Mission

The goal of Trooper Island Camp is to support the development of children's self image, including physical, mental, and spiritual growth.

Results / Accomplishments

Founded in 1965, Trooper Island Camp hosts around 700 underprivileged children annually from across Kentucky for summer camp. The program provides the building blocks to support physical, mental, and spiritual development.

Kentucky State Police Post 16, which serves Daviess, Hancock, Henderson, McLean, Ohio, and Union counties, sends low-income, disadvantaged children of its service area to Trooper Island for a week of camp ever year. For the summer of 2013, Post 16 is sending over 30 children to camp.
