The Coal Combustion Products Partnership (C2P2)

An Effective Practice

Description

The Coal Combustion Products Partnership (C2P2) Program is a cooperative effort between EPA and the American Coal Ash Association (ACAA), Utility Solid Waste Activities Group (USWAG), Department of Energy (DOE), and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) to promote the beneficial use of CCPs and the environmental benefits that result from their use. The use of coal combustion products is a way to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, and to increase industrial recycling.

Goal / Mission

C2P2 aims for the following goals:
-Increase the use of coal fly ash in concrete by 43 percent, from 14 million metric tons per year in 2001 to 20 million metric tons by 2010.
-Reduce greenhouse gas emissions from concrete production by approximately 6 million metric tons by 2010.

Results / Accomplishments

Accomplishments of the C2P2 include:
-Developed a comprehensive Web site to support the C2P2 program. The web site is located at: http://www.epa.gov/c2p2/.
-Published case studies demonstrating how CCPs have successfully been used and identifying barriers to CCP utilization. (http://www.epa.gov/epaoswer/osw/conserve/c2p2/cases/studies.htm)
-Co-sponsored update to the Fly Ash Facts for Highway Engineers booklet with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and ACAA.
-Published booklet outlining the benefits and impacts of using CCPs in highway applications.
-Developing booklet outlining the use of CCPs in building construction applications and the associated environmental effects and benefits.
