WorkWell

A Good Idea

Description

The WorkWell Initiative was developed to assist and recognize changes that public and private employers make to support physical activity and healthy eating during work hours. WorkWell established two different programs to address the needs of public and private employers: (1) private sector WorkWell: Healthy Working Place Designation Program and (2) public sector WorkWell: Action Planning for a Healthy Workforce.

For the private sector, employers could receive recognition at three levels- bronze, silver and gold. The recognition levels are based on demonstration of organizational support for changes in work environment and culture, physical activity in the workday, and availability of healthier food choices at work. All employers that receive the designation awards are featured in a monthly magazine, an online video series promoted by the business community newspaper, and on the Thurston County Chamber of Commerce website.

The public sector program was designed to support employers that want to make key organizational changes to impact employee health and fitness. A self-assessment tool was developed to highlight three components of workforce health promotion: (1) expression of leadership support and commitment to employee health, (2) expansion of written policies or formal practices in the organization, and (3) environmental assets and supports throughout the workplace. After completing the assessment, interested employers participated in a two-stage process that provided decision makers with information to plan beneficial changes.
