This practice has been Archived and is no longer maintained.

Description

The goal of Salud, Educacion, Prevencion y Autocuidado (SEPA) is to eliminate or reduce sex risk behaviors among low-income Mexican and Puerto Rican women. SEPA is delivered to a group of between 11 and 13 women by bilingual and bicultural Latinas who have been certified as HIV counselors.

During the six-session intervention, counselors work to promote self-efficacy and build skills. Topics that are discussed include: HIV/AIDS in the community, condom use, human anatomy and sexuality, preventing domestic violence, and negotiation of safer sex. The intervention content is delivered using several methods, such as: group discussions, hands-on activities, videos, skills demonstrations, role playing, and homework to build self-efficacy.
